The blood of Chinese sleeper (Perccottus glenii), silver Prussian carp (Carassius gibelio) and silverfin (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) was studied. The linear dimensions and volume of red blood cells and their nuclei, nuclear-cytoplasmic ratio, red blood cell density, and hemoglobin content in the blood of the above species were determined. We also compared the surface area of individual red blood cells and their total area per unit volume of blood
The analysis of our data suggests that the linear dimensions of the red blood cells of the silverfin and their volume are much smaller than those of the Chinese sleeper and silver Prussian carp. This ensures their greater number per cubic millimeter of blood, higher hemoglobin content, shorter diffusion distance, greater relative red blood cell area, and, as a result, faster gas exchange.
Silver Prussian carp has the largest values of longitudinal and transverse diameters and volume of red blood cells, as well as total volume and area of red blood cells per unit volume of blood. This, as well as its low motor activity, allows it to survive in reservoirs with low oxygen content in the water, although its hemoglobin content is the lowest among the species studied.
The smallest erythrocyte nuclei sizes and the lowest value of the nuclear-cytoplasmic ratio among the studied animals were founded in the Chinese sleeper. Its red blood cell volume is almost half that of silver Prussian carp, and their number per unit blood volume is much higher. It can be assumed that this contributes to a higher hemoglobin content in the blood of Chinese sleeper than in silver Prussian carp and to the survival of this species in low-oxygen reservoirs.
