Abstract

Large-scale in recent years withering of pine forests (which forms the basis of the forest fund of the Volyn region) testified to the inability of these single-storied even-aged monocultures to withstand global climate change at the regional level. This necessitates the transformation of pure pine forests into mixed ones, which have much higher biological stability. The article evaluates the possibilities and prospects of using one of the original subsidiary species of pine forests – common oak. The study of modern characteristics of oak populations in pine forests was conducted on the basis of three forestry enterprises: state enterprises «Volodymyr-Volynske forestry», «Ratnivske forestry», «Starovyzhivske forestry». It has been established that in the current populations of oak the natural component predominates, which is mostly concentrated in the pine forests of older age in the form of developed undergrowth. There is a direct dependence of the number and condition of oak undergrowth on the relative density of the mother stand, the distance to the seed centers and hygrotop and the inverse dependence on the amount of underbrush and grass cover. The conclusion about expediency and prospects of wider use of renewal of an oak in pine forests is made.
